Dead Witch Walking The Hollows Book 1 Editorial Reviews
Source: Product Description
The underground population of witches, vampires, werewolves—creatures of dreams and nightmares—has lived beside humans for centuries, hiding their powers. But after a genetically engineered virus wipes out a large part of humanity, many of the "Inderlanders" reveal themselves, changing everything.
Rachel Morgan, witch and bounty hunter with the Inderland Runner Services, is one of the best at apprehending supernatural lawbreakers throughout Cincinnati, but when it comes to following the rules, she falls desperately short. Determined to buck the system, she quits and takes off on the run with an I.S. contract on her head and is reluctantly forced to team up with Ivy, Inderland's best runner . . . and a living vampire. But this witch is way out of her league, and to clear her name, Rachel must evade shape-changing assassins, outwit a powerful businessman/crime lord, and survive a vicious underground fight-to-the-death . . . not to mention her own roommate.

On an alternate Earth a bioengineered weapon escaped from a lab, spread around the world killing off a quarter of the world's population. Beings of myth and legend known as Inderlanders because they were immune to the disease held civilization together until the germ died out. Local enforcement was dissolved and the Federal Inderland Bureau was formed to monitor the actions of the Inderlanders. The I.S. was created by out of work Inderlander law enforcement officials to police the supernatural beings.
Rachel works for the I.S. but every case she is sent out on results in failure. She knows her boss Denon hates her so she decides to quit and go freelance. Her friend Ivy, a live vampire, also quits much to Demon's dismay and he calls for Rachel to be assassinated for luring Ivy away.. The earth witch is no match for the creatures he sends against her so she decides to find the evidence that will convict Congressman Trent Kalanack for trafficking in Brimstone. If she is successful her contract with the IS is nullified and she is a free woman but Rachel almost gets killed in her attempts to expose the congressman.
Fans of Laurell K. Hamilton and Tonya Huff and Charlaine Harris are going to love DEAD WITCH WALKING, a supernatural action adventure novel set in what feels like a fantasy realm. The gutsy and honorable heroine goes through a lot of perilous adventures to gain her freedom, but uses her earth magic powers as a defensive weapon that won't permanently injure or kill those attacking her. Kim Harrison has the magic touch to enchant her audience with her storytelling while placing a spell that requires reading future books in this series.

Rating: 3 (A good idea..but could have been better) Was helpful to 3 from 6 votes
Well if you liked the Anita Blake series by Laurell K. Hamilton, you will most likely like this book Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison. This is a bit milder..it seems the main characters worst danger throughout the entire book is where Rachel almosts gets her throat torn out by her roommate, Ivy. She is weak in this book, but if this becomes a series, I think it will be worth reading. This book has a horrible ending though and leaves too many questions unanswered to the point where you are frustrated and hope there is a sequel to finish it off. Rachel needs to develop more and start kicking some supernatural [stuff] instead of getting caught in traps all the time. Maybe then it will be perfect. She has a very interesting side kick..a pixie! Who would have thought of that?
Rating: 4 (Good Paranormal Book) Was helpful to 3 from 4 votes
I liked this book. If you enjoy supernatural/paranormal books you will enjoy this one. It does not have a romantic element that so many of this genre has, and is not as sensual as some others. It has a touch of humor and keeps the reader entertained.
The book leaves the reader with a lot of unanswered questions. Does this mean a sequel is coming?

I was so happy to have stumbled on to this book! It's got all of my favorite brew of elements: girl power and vampires! If you liked the concept of the Anita Blake novels and southern vampire novels being set in an alternate universe where the supernatural and humans co-habitate - then this is for you.
The only thing that I disliked was that the characters and the plot were only developed enough to make you itch for the sequel or series!
Other than that it was great!
Rating: 5 (An awesome blend of anita blake & shadowrun) Was helpful to 1 from 1 votes
This is a book that once you start you can't set it down. At no time was there a dull moment. We had the world knowledge of the supernatural and the use of magic as contraband. The characters were real in this book. Harrison actually made me care about them. Being a vampire in Harrison's 'verse is not a good thing. Rachel, the main character, was a heroine, yet she had her own flaws that made her human. The supporting cast was excellent as well. I really liked Ivy and I hope to see more of her and her story! Great job.
