A Slow Burn Defiance Texas Trilogy Book 2 Editorial Reviews

Source: Product Description

'Beautifully and sensitively written, her characters realistic and well-developed. Mary DeMuth has a true gift for showing how God's light can penetrate even the darkest of situations.' -- Chuck Colson She touched Daisy's shoulder. So cold. So hard. So unlike Daisy. Yet so much like herself it made Emory shudder. Burying her grief, Emory Chance is determined to find her daughter Daisy's murderer---a man she saw in a flicker of a vision. But when the investigation hits every dead end, her despair escalates. As questions surrounding Daisy's death continue to mount, Emory's safety is shattered by the pursuit of a stranger, and she can't shake the sickening fear that her own choices contributed to Daisy's disappearance. Will she ever experience the peace her heart longs for? The second book in the Defiance, Texas Trilogy, this suspenseful novel is about courageous love, the burden of regret, and bonds that never break. It is about the beauty and the pain of telling the truth. Most of all, it is about the power of forgiveness and what remains when shame no longer holds us captive.

This book is best understood if you have already read Daisy Chain since A Slow Burn is the second book of the Defiance Texas Trilogy. In Daisy Chain we were left with a lot of unanswered questions. Some are answered in A Slow Burn and some are left to be answered in the final book of the series.

The Love of Jesus is portrayed in the character Hixon as he follows Christs leading to love a person while they are still unlovable. Sometimes God calls each of us to do just that. Am I up to it? As I read A Slow Burn I found myself with this and other soul-searching questions.
Rating: 5 (A fine novel of a woman overcoming her own grief)

Vengeance is a strong reason. "A Slow Burn" is the second story in the Defiance Texas Trilogy, following Emory Chance as she is driven to find her daughter's murderer. But it seems that the pursuit of justice may not be Emory's biggest obstacle, but rather her own grief, as mysteries and problems appear along the way. "A Slow Burn" is a fine novel of a woman overcoming her own grief, and leaves readers seeking the third book in the series.

'A Slow Burn, second in a trilogy, brings out the redemptive love of Jesus. This story relates the everyday life of a drug addict bent on her own will. God's love and passion for us is brought to light by the character Hixon who examplies Jesus' desire. The details that Mary DeMuth writes about in the life of all the characters can only be found in the mercy of God. This series is a must read to see God's hand at work. A third book will be looked forward to,to see how Mary's passion in the fulfillment of the unlovely can be given to everyone who seeks.

Have you ever seen your reflection in a shattered mirror? The shards show you little pieces of yourself, distorted segments of who you see yourself to be. In "A Slow Burn" Mary DeMuth gives us a vivid look into the shattered life of Emory, a single mother whose child has been killed. Emory is not a woman whose life is empty and who is seeking to fill it. Instead, her life is filled with guilt, bitterness, brokeness, and razor-sharp self-hatred. When Daisy's killer stalks Emory, she slashes to ribbons every person who wants to help her, leaving her vulnerable to what she thinks she deserves.

The book ends on a hopeful note, not on the full summer of redemption, but on the early spring of new birth. This mystery, with enough twists to knot up a snake, will keep you turning the pages right to the end.

The toxic combination of grief, remorse, bitterness and drugs has Emory Chance in a death grip of despair, spiraling down toward self-destruction as she agonized over her daughter Daisy's murder. Hixon, Bald Muriel and others reach out to demonstrate God's love only to be rebuffed time and again. Now it seems that Daisy's killer may be stalking Emory. Will she reach out toward the love that's offered to her in time? Read this raw, gripping mystery to find out.

Mary DeMuth gives us hauntingly memorable characters with real issues and everyday flawed heroes we can love and aspire to imitate. I liked this book and learned much about the devastating emotions of someone in this kind of grief and possibly some practical ways to help, but I wouldn't recommend this to a friend who is currently struggling . The emotions are too close and real. I look forward to the conclusion in book three with the hope of grace realized.
