The Country House Courtship A Regency Inspirational Romance Editorial Reviews

Source: Product Description

Linore Burkard’s fans devoured her first two Regency novels Before the Season Ends and The House in Grosvenor Square. Now, as her third novel opens, the year is 1818 and Miss Beatrice Forsythe is determined to marry well. After all, her sister, Ariana, married The Paragon, Mr. Phillip Mornay, five years earlier--which all but guarantees that she, Beatrice, can also make a famous match to a wealthy man.

But her sister and husband have disappeared from high society as they raise a family at their country estate. Can Beatrice persuade them to chaperone her in London?  And what about Beatrice's business with the curate, Mr. O’Brien, whom she rashly promised to marry years earlier. At seventeen now, she has no wish to marry a mere clergyman—despite his agreeable countenance and gentle, understanding ways.

When Mr. Tristan Barton becomes the tenant of the Manor House, Beatrice's hopes seem to have found their object. But when Ariana falls gravely ill, secrets come to light, motives are revealed, and the pretenses that are easy to keep up in the darkness begin to crumble. Hearts are bared, truths uncovered, and when all is said and done, a country house courtship like no other has occurred!

As always, Linore Burkard delivers “spirited romance for the Jane Austen soul.”

Country House Courtship is another charming romance from the author of Before the Season Ends and The House on Grosvenor Square, two of my favorite novels!

This one is about Arianna's little sister, Beatrice, who has her heart set on getting to London for "the season" to find herself a rich husband like her brother-in-law, Mr. Mornay. But Arianna is concerned that Beatrice's motives and methods are immature and she might find just the right kind of man--a good, respectable clergyman--right there on her own country house estate.

Fans of Burkard's will enjoy the third book in the series and will be anxious for more from this insightful, entertaining author! But even if you haven't read the first two books, this one stands alone and will delight Regency romance fans.

I write this review from a different sort of perspective. Books by Linore Rose Burkard are often touted as, "Inspirational Romance for the Jane Austen soul." Now if you love Jane Austen, chances are you've already discovered Linore and her wonderful books based on that glowing recommendation. But I must confess. It scared me away. Although I enjoy much about these books and this era, I feel like I'm slogging through the formal convoluted language every time I pick up a Jane Austen novel. I have yet to make it to the end of one. For me, pleasure reading they are not.

So it was with some trepidation that began the advanced copy of The Country House Courtship sent to me for this review. By the time I reached the second chapter, I was able to breathe a sigh of relief because I found myself enjoying the book enormously. The language rings of Jane Austen, yet is much friendlier to the modern reader. The omniscient viewpoint made me feel like I was sitting with a friend as they told me a tale and proved a pleasant change from the norm.

In The Country House Courtship Linore combines the best elements of Regency fiction with the best elements of contemporary writing to delightful effect. I would call these books "Jane Austen Lite," and I mean that in the best sort of way. There is no slogging or trudging through this book. Readers can enjoy a wonderful Regency style novel that is friendly to a modern day audience. So of course, I highly recommend this book to Jane Austen fans. However, I think anyone who enjoys romance or historical fiction will love this book as well.

In 1818 Beatrice Forsythe plans to follow in the footsteps of her sister Ariana, who happily married wealthy Phillip Mornay (see House on Grosvenor Square and Before the Season Ends). She plans to wed a paragon just like her brother-in-law.

Curate Peter O'Brien is nominated as the vicar in Glendover, but before he can assume the position, Phillip must approve him. When she was younger, Beatrice agreed to marry Peter one day, but since Ariana's lofty rise, he is no longer acceptable to her. Instead she wants the Mornay family to sponsor her a season in London although she believes Tristan Barton, who is staying at the manor House, with his looks and money is the perfect spouse for her. That is until Ariana becomes ill and Beatrice learns family secrets.

The Country House Courtship is an entreating leisurely plotted Regency romance starring a young woman who wants what her older sister has; not understanding the cost. The strong cast makes for a fine historical relationship drama as each comes to the Country House with personal often conflicting agendas.

Burkhard presents her third novel, a sequel to The House in Gosvenor Square (April 2009), replete with in-depth research, accurate period detail and explanations of period terms. There's even a glossary, and discussion questions.

The story is set in Middlesex, England, 1818. Seventeen-year-old Beatrice has decided to marry advantageously, as her sister Ariana married in the Gosvenor Square novel(#2 in this series). She is counting on Ariana's connections and agreement to chaperone her in London. When the new curate, Mr. O'Brien appears, she is reminded that she rashly promised to marry him five years earlier. Mr. Tristan Barton rents a house next door, and asks permission to court her. But Ariana falls gravely ill, and secrets come to light, motives are revealed, and pretenses cannot be kept up. Which man will she marry?

Linore Rose Burkard lives with her husband and five children in southwestern Ohio. [...]

Jane Austin fans will love this book. Also teenagers and men who love history, and everyone between.

Leave it to Linore Burkard to pack not one, but three love stories within one romance novel. Ariana and Mr. Mornay are still deeply in love. Their romance is felt throughout these pages. It is heartening to see when they have children roaming about, guests visiting, and even when they disagree, how their love for one another has grown deeper through the course of their marriage.

They also play a very important role in helping Beatrice choose the type of marriage she would like to have. Initially she only sees the surface qualities their union offered Ariana, but with time she realizes the love they share would have been the same no matter what their financial situation. She is then free to choose a man she loves whether he is wealthy or not.

The author's research into the times is always second to none. When serious illness with terrible fevers sweeps through the cities and then into the country, the doctors don't know how to treat it properly and many die. It was disheartening to hear how they bled their patients, covered them with layers of blankets to "sweat the fever out," and advised against cool compresses.

This was a book about relationships more than anything else. The author beautifully captured the interplay between families, rivals, friends, husband and wife... and all done in an era where the rules were different but the heart doesn't change. I would love to say it was a perfect ending to the series she's written about this family, but I'm still considering a petition for more books. :o)
